Lutheran Church

We have now reached one of the most important cultural landmarks of Grodno — the Lutheran Church, often referred to as the Grodno Lutheran Kirche.

This Protestant church appeared here in the 18th century.

At that time many foreigners lived in the Novy Svet district, especially Germans who were actively involved in the development of local brewing traditions.

The land on which the church stands today was once granted to the community by the king.

Here once stood a two-storey building. On the ground floor there was a dining hall and a tavern, while the upper floor served as a place for prayer.

In 1913, it was decided to combine these functions in a new building constructed in the Neo-Gothic style. Today this structure is the only historic Lutheran kirche still functioning in Belarus. The congregation continues to gather here, and regular church services are still held.

If you have the opportunity, try to visit the kirche on Saturday or Sunday, when wonderful concerts are often held here — most of them featuring the organ.

Inside the church you can also see a clock with a mechanism that has been working for more than one hundred years. Take a moment to look at the interior decoration, especially the stained-glass windows on both sides of the altar.

The clock is decorated with an unusual emblem — a smiley face, a symbol that already existed more than a century ago and has become a charming detail of this Lutheran kirche.

At the entrance to the choir loft you will notice a spiral staircase, also more than a hundred years old. This architectural element adds a special elegance to the building’s Neo-Gothic character.
