The Origin of the Name “Kalozha”

There are several theories about the origin of the name Kalozha.

According to the first version, in the early 15th century the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas launched a campaign against Pskov. Although the campaign failed, he destroyed one of the suburbs of the city called Kalozha.

According to chronicles, Vytautas captured 11,000 prisoners and resettled them near Grodno. The settlers named their new settlement after their former homeland.

Another theory appeared in the late 20th century. Linguists suggest that in Old East Slavic the word “kolozhani” referred to a place where springs flow from the ground.

Geological studies have indeed confirmed the existence of natural springs near the Kalozha hill.
