Augustinian Monastery and the German Market

In the past, the Holy Trinity Monastery stood here, although nothing of it has survived today. The nearby Bolshaya Troitskaya and Malaya Troitskaya Streets were named after this monastery.

The blue house at 17 Dominikanskaya Street is one of the oldest buildings in the area. It was most likely built in the second half of the 19th century for a Jewish shelter on the foundation of an earlier structure.

Next to the monastery there was once one of the city’s markets, where foreign merchants are believed to have traded. At different times it was known as the German Market, the Fish Market, and the Meat Market.

In the past this was the edge of the city. Not far from here stood the Vilnius Gate, where the road leading to Vilnius began.

City gates were an essential feature of medieval European cities. In Grodno, during the 15th–17th centuries, there were three fortified gate towers, and the most representative of them stood exactly on the side facing the Vilnius road.
