Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin

A Young Cathedral with a Dramatic History Built in 1904–1905 as a garrison church for the Grodno military, designed by architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky. Style: Russian-Byzantine eclecticism.

🏛 Architecture

Cross-in-square plan with five domes. Main dome on a light drum with arches.

Façades decorated with:

• arcature friezes,
• ceramic tiles,
• mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary.

Interior:

• marble floor,
• stucco decoration,
• large iconostasis,
• rich wall paintings.

🔧 Soviet Period and Revival

Closed after the Revolution; later used as:

• House of the Red Army,
• Palace of Textile Workers.
• Returned to the Orthodox Church in 1991.

Restoration (1991–1993) reconstructed domes, bell tower, paintings, iconostasis. Today it is the main Orthodox cathedral of the Grodno Diocese.
