Zhiliber Park

From 18th-Century Botanical Garden to the Green Heart of Grodno Today Zhiliber Park is one of the city’s most beloved places. Its history began nearly 250 years ago as part of a grand Enlightenment project.
🌿 Enlightenment and Medicine
In 1775, at the initiative of Antoni Tyzenhauz, a botanical garden was established in the valley of the Hrodnichanka River. The project was supervised by the French physician, botanist, and encyclopedist Jean Emmanuel Gilibert, after whom the park is named. Its goal was ambitious: to unite nature, science, and education.
A medical school operated here, teaching children of townspeople and soldiers:
- botany,
- basics of surgery and anatomy,
- medicine and pharmacology.
The garden became a unique scientific center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
🌼 The Garden’s Appearance The botanical garden cultivated: medicinal and rare plants from across Europe, exotic species suitable for the Neman region climate. The territory featured: flower beds, greenhouses, walking paths, small architectural forms typical of 18th-century regular gardens.
📉 Decline and Revival
In 1781, the Medical Academy closed, and the garden gradually declined, though it remained a public park.
In the 19th century, it housed:
- a military hospital,
- a city garden,
- a theological seminary building.
During the interwar Polish period:
- a summer theatre,
- attractions,
- public events were organized here.
🏗 20th Century Transformations
After World War II, the park survived but lost part of its historic structure. In the 1960s–1970s:
- a stage, fountain, and café were added,
- monuments to Pushkin and Maxim Gorky installed,
- a cascading staircase with flowerbeds and lighting constructed,
- the Hrodnichanka River partially enclosed in a collector system.
🌳 The Park Today
Today, Zhiliber Park is:
a central green recreation area, a venue for concerts and celebrations, a popular meeting place.
