Lutheran church

A Quiet Place of Faith in the Heart of Old Grodno

Modest on the outside but significant in meaning, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John is the only Lutheran church in the city.

Built in 1843 to the design of architect Adam Propper, on the site of a former Jesuit estate, it reflects Grodno’s religious and national diversity.

Funds were raised by the local Lutheran community — Germans and Poles living in Grodno and nearby areas.

🏛 Architecture

Style: classicism with elements of late Empire.

Recognizable by:

• a four-column portico,
• tall arched windows,
• rectangular volume,
• semicircular eastern apse.

The façades are restrained and elegant. Inside: a bright hall with choir loft and organ, in the Protestant tradition of clarity and austerity.

🕯 20th Century

During the Soviet period, the church was closed and later used as:

• an archive,
• a concert hall,
• a restaurant.

In 1995, after being returned to the Lutheran community, services resumed.

Today, it hosts:

• regular services,
• sacred music concerts,
• interfaith meetings.
